V-RAM SOLIDs PUMP SYSTEMS AT
SMITHFIELD PACKING COMPANY, TAR HEEL, NC.

Smithfield Packing, formerly Carolina Foods, in Tar Heel, North Carolina has a 30" double V-Ram pump in the Rendering Department.

This pump has been in operation since January 1, 1995. It runs approximately 22 hours per day, 5 to 6 days per week, pumping 100,000 to 200,000 lbs. per hour (over 500,000,000 lbs / year ). The 30" Double V-Ram Pump at Tar Heel is the largest rendering piston pump in operation in a rendering facility in the world.

"As long as hydraulic oil remains clean and kept at a 125 degree temperature; the pumping units and hydraulic cylinders will perform to recommended hours of running time before rebuild", as quoted by maintenance personnel.

Minimal service parts have been needed to keep this pump in operation.

Smithfield also has in operation in their facility, three 24" pumps that are pumping bone and fat scraps.

They have two 24" pumps in the flume area pumping guts from the kill floor, and they have a 20" pump in the wastewater department pumping fat skimmings.
